Stoep Talk: December 2014

The holidays have rolled round again, and Stanford is gearing up for a very busy festive season! I vividly remember holidays as a child when my mom and dad used to take us for our annual holidays. They were probably impatient for the holiday to start because I can still recall being woken up in the middle of night, suitcase already packed, and told that we were leaving early (so early, in fact, that it was still dark).

That sense of excitement is still with me every Christmas and New Year; the wonder of going somewhere I’d never been before. December is also such a special time because there is so much goodwill this time of the year. Strangers wish you a merry Christmas, people look to see how they can help those less privileged, and everyone looks for that perfect present that will give joy to their loved ones. The whole world seems right again!

This holiday season in Stanford, we have loads of fun for the whole family. You can even do all your Christmas shopping in one day: come to the Stanford Street Festival on December 14th and support the local artisans. There are lots of activities planned for this day including the Stanford Street Dip, acrobats, a magician, face painting, and perhaps a visit from Father Christmas. Queen Victoria Street will be closed off for a street party, so this is going to be a day not to be missed!

We also have a wonderful local charity event taking place on 13 December. Music on the Lawn with benefits going to Stanford Animal Welfare Society.

Then the event Stanfordians look forward to every year: The Stanford Players are performing We are the World on 17, 18, 20 December. Tickets are selling fast so make sure you buy yours now. We’ve had a few sneak peaks of the show and it is looking awesome!

The Christmas Sunset Market is going to be great fun on 19 December. Taste local wine and food and enjoy a wonderful country market atmosphere.

Tuesday, 23 December, you can see two bands for the price of one at the Birkenhead Brewery Amphitheatre as we Turn it up Stanford. South African band Sons of Settlers are playing and all the way from Germany we have Riders Connection. Tickets are available at Stanford Tourism at R70pp. Friday, 26 December, is our famous Boxing Day Cricket Match from 8am to 8pm with food stalls, and the usual potjiekos competition. Proceeds go towards Stanford Animal Welfare Society and the Children’s Cricket Fund. See you all there!

Be sure to take a photo with one of the frames hidden in the village and share it on your Facebook or Twitter using the hashtag #StanfordFramed. We’ll keep our eyes out for these great moments and share it on the official Stanford Tourism platforms! There are weekly prizes up for grabs, so check our Facebook and Website for more info. You can meet the artists involved here.

That’s all for now, folks. And remember, if anyone asks where you got your news, tell them you heard it through the Grapevine!
